The interface is much more traditional, with a bin for clips, a viewer window for creating segments out of those clips, a full timeline with support for multiple audio and video tracks, and a canvas in which to view your final composition.Īt the top left of the window is the bin, showing 10 clips and the default sequence. However, after launching Final Cut Express, I sensed the transition would be easier than expected. ![]() Somewhere in my deep past, I had purchased a previous version of Final Cut Express, and so, with a $99 cost of entry, I decided to take the plunge and try to learn something new… of course, choosing to do so with a video blog due in only a couple weeks may not have been the best decision. (From where I sit, it’s the wrong decision, but then again, they don’t ask my opinion on such things.)įor a while, it seemed that iMovie HD was going to be my only option… but then, just before I was set to start working on the latest video, Apple released Final Cut Express 4, and dropped the price $100 in the process ($199 new, $99 upgrade). However, Apple has made it pretty clear that the future of iMovie HD is, well, not-the program has reached the end of its life, and for better or worse, iMovie ’08 is the future of consumer video editing on the Mac. With my dislike for iMovie ’08 and desire for a better solution, I was faced with a decision: do I go back to my tried-and-true iMovie HD, or do I set out in a new direction? I know iMovie HD inside-out, and it would certainly be an easy move to make. I also missed many of iMovie’s effects, and the more-logical manner of handling projects-iMovie ’08 automatically creates “events” when you import video, but I tend to think in terms of projects, and prefer direct control over such things. As you add more and more clips to a project, there’s a lot of scrolling around to find the portion of the clip you want to use. Overall, I just couldn’t adjust to this new paradigm, finding it imprecise, visually busy, and not at all intuitive. In addition, if you’re using the mouse like this to preview clips, you have to drag it from the rightmost edge of the frame back to the left in order to continue playing the clip when it spans more than one row. As you move the mouse over the clip bin, the clips play both audio and video-I found this very distracting and not at all useful. Here’s what the “bin” looks like for a project I was doing involving some X-Plane video captures:Īs you can see, each clip is represented as a number of stills, and there’s a thin break between each clip. In iMovie ’08, however, the traditional timeline and storage bin have undergone major changes-your videos are shown as a series of still images in both the bin and timeline area, and a traditional timeline view is not available.Īs but one example, as I noted above, clips in iMovie ’08 are presented as a series of still frames as you move the mouse over the stills, the video and audio play back. In a typical video-editing app, such as iMovie HD, you have a spot to store your video clips, and a timeline on which to place them. While iMovie ’08 added a number of interesting features beyond those offered in iMovie HD, it also removed quite a few, and more importantly to me, created a completely new paradigm for video editing. ![]() iLife ’08 includes a program named iMovie ’08, but it’s related to its predecessor in name only-iMovie ’08 is a completely new program. I was excited because I enjoy working in video, though it never seems I have enough time to do so, and nervous because Apple had recently (with the introduction of iLife ’08) basically killed off my video production tool of choice: iMovie HD. ![]() When I learned that I’d be part of the Macworld Video production team, I was both excited and more than a bit apprehensive. ![]() Click the radio button next to I Accept, and then click the Install button. ![]() It was made all the worse when I had to repeat myself as I guess I wound up muttering the title to the cashier, who couldn’t hear me above the crowd of people from behind the glass. I’d asked for movie tickets to go see childish Disney movies like the recent Winnie the Pooh with less self-conscious embarrassment or worry over being judged than I did when I had to ask for the ticket to go see this thing. I did manage to avoid the actual Friday the 13 th release date when I found out my go-to theatre had an early 8PM Thursday night showing, but still, the fact remains that 12/13/13 was the original release date, and that is surely a time period that will live in infamy for me for quite some time: the time when I went to go see a Tyler Perry movie in a massive theatre with, no doubt, all the die hard fans. I wound up skipping over Tyler Perry’s romantic melodrama Tyler Perry’s Temptation, as per my usual avoidance of his work, and with little guilt or obligation, but somehow my almost prophetic declaration regarding the teaming of these two racially divided contemporaries made me feel like it was almost a sort of promise that I made to no one in particular, except maybe to myself in a sort of accidentally suicidal pact. Seriously, though, I was dreading the day that this would come out, as I felt a sort of obligation to actually stay true to my word based on that bizarre coincidence alone. I guess I should’ve known that not even Satan himself wouldn’t want his big finale to be upstaged by such a massive bomb as this. Also, would you look at that? We’re all still here. And that it would not be released during the apocalypse, but rather during the celebration of His Son’s birth, and yet also on the official release date of Decem– which, if you’re reading this far from now, you may not immediately know is also Friday the 13 th. Then, a few days later, God showed that He had a smug sense of humor with me when He deemed that such a thing would happen. When I joked about such a thing happening all the way back in January when I was reviewing the films of 2012, I mentioned that if such a thing were going to happen, I would be among the first to see such an event take place, and it would be my first Tyler Perry film that I would spend good money on to see in theatres. ![]() ![]() I used to think that this would be a sign of the apocalypse – Tyler Perry teaming up with Larry the Cable Guy to make a movie together.
