She agreed with me that the biggest commitment either of us could ever make would be combining our libraries, and that we probably shouldn’t take that step until we had at least two kids. The worst thing I did as a kid that I still feel guilty about. The times we each tried to rescue a hurt animal we came across. After she returned, we slid right back into our routine of increasingly intimate disclosures. Our three days “apart” didn’t stall anything. It stung even more when my plane touched down several hours later with nobody to tell I’d arrived safely. “Man, I think I parked in the furthest possible spot.” “The line at security is insane - is it spring break or something?” “Ok, at my gate!” “Boarding!” “Shutting down now, about to take off :).”Īll those imagined texts with no recipient. I had internalized the idea that love is having someone who cares about every utterly benign detail of your travel. When I took my first business trip as a single man a few years earlier, I remember wishing I had someone to text from the airport. This single message meant more to me than the thousands of others we had exchanged. In the morning, I awoke to a message she had sent from the airport, waiting out a delay. It’s strange to miss someone you have never actually met. Two weeks in, after playing and chatting four to six hours every night, she warned me that she was meeting her father in South Korea the coming weekend and wouldn’t be around to keep up our nightly ritual. With her, I felt free to open myself up entirely. In person, I’m typically so shy in romantic situations that I can barely make eye contact with someone I’ve just met. I also knew that it was the baked-in distance and the impossibility of a date that had allowed me to fall so deeply in the first place. On the Words With Friends board, we were both masters of the endgame, but there didn’t seem to be any endgame for us in real life. We were a most pleasant distraction for each other, but school would eventually resume for her, and I’d eventually meet someone in Reno. ![]() It wasn’t even clear that she was coming back to Reno she would go wherever she managed to land a job. We were always brutally honest about our future, namely in agreeing there wasn’t one. I laughed it off and thanked her, but I told her I had no illusions. She told me a story about a co-worker who had an online relationship with a woman for two years. Every 45 minutes or so, everything would disappear, and I wanted to preserve all of it, proof that such things are possible, and at any age.Īfter a week, I told my best friend back East what was happening. When a game ended, our chats from that game ended with it. The next night was no different, and I realized I had to start getting this down on paper. Ridiculous, flirtatious or serious - whatever the topic, it was always easy. Those six hours had been too good, the kind of night you dream about, and then suddenly the sun is rising. I told her I always botch clichés - “It’s not like it’s rocket surgery.”įalling asleep that night, happier than I’d felt in some time, I wondered if I was being catfished. I confessed that I’m more likely to cry during a movie trailer than while watching the actual movie. She told me the worst gift she had ever given a boyfriend was a giant Hershey bar. Peepers and Tefnut, and my dog, Inky) to my fanciful dream of one day running a retirement home for animals: geriatric cows and octogenarian pigs happily living out their golden years with nothing whatsoever expected from them. We talked about everything from our childhood pets (her rats, Mr. Like any good first date, I didn’t want it to end. At one point, I had to slide my couch closer to an outlet because my battery was at 2 percent. Soon we were playing two games at once and chatting in both, two entirely different conversational threads - one serious and the other playful. An odd first date: half a world between us, sitting on my couch with phone in hand, looking for bingos and hoping to draw an “S” or a blank. Later that evening, she challenged me to a game, at 6 p.m. But hey, a good Words With Friends partner can be even harder to find than love. So it seemed cruelly fitting that the first woman I really connected with had moved to China. Over those months, I had messaged more than 60 women and heard back from only six, leading to zero dates. I had moved to Reno from Washington, D.C., six months earlier to take a job at the University of Nevada and was having trouble meeting people. She accepted but told me coffee wasn’t possible she was in China for the school year teaching English and wouldn’t be back until July. Her OkCupid profile mentioned that she was really good at Scrabble, so I sent her a message challenging her to a game of Words With Friends.

The headline addition in version 2 is an automatic harmony generation module. Metering is included for the inputs and outputs along with level controls as before, but if you already own iZotope's Insight metering plug-in, this can also be viewed from within Nectar 2. The lower DSP, lower-latency Tracking mode has been retained as an alternative to the 'full fat' Mixing mode, the latter using lookahead where necessary to fine tune the processing at the expense of slightly higher latency. In Advanced mode the various processing modules can also be reordered by dragging and dropping to create custom signal flows, while in basic mode all you can do is switch individual modules on or off and adjust the basic front-panel controls. In Overview mode, a single slider might actually adjust several parameters behind the scenes, and the controls are often named after terms producers might use instead of being presented with a shelving high EQ, for example, you might be invited to adjust a control called Sparkle.Ĭlicking the Overview button brings up an Advanced mode for deeper editing, which brings access to the individual controls of each section in about the same depth as you'd expect to see for conventional plug-ins. ![]() Each preset calls up the required combination of the individual processing sections and their settings and the simplified Overview controls let you switch individual processing modules on and off and adjust key elements of the sound. As with the previous version, a large number of 'macro' presets can be called up by the user and then adjusted in an Overview mode using a manageable number of controls, making it well suited both to professionals who need results in a hurry and those less experienced users who are not so confident about their processing skills. A browser is used to select presets from drop-down menus classified by musical genre, and there are over 150 new presets in version 2. I don't know why extremely dark GUIs are currently in vogue but I'm not altogether in favour I'm all for style but not if it gets in the way of functionality!Īpart from having the spectrum analyser/EQ screen at the top rather than the bottom, Nectar 2 actually works in pretty much the same way as before. However, iZotope have succumbed to the temptation to make just a couple of things in the meter section black on a dark grey background, rendering them almost invisible under anything other than ideal viewing conditions. Though it looks quite different from the previous version, being darker and considerably less orange, Nectar 2 remains, in the main, easy to navigate, as most of the text is white on a very dark grey background. Other than Breath and the offline pitch editing, Nectar still opens as a single plug-in window, this time with a slightly larger, redesigned graphic interface that bears an obvious family resemblance to iZotope's Ozone 5 and Alloy 2 all-in-one processing plug-ins. Nectar 2 is a cross-platform plug-in that works in RTAS, AudioSuite, VST2, VST3, Audio Unit and AAX formats, including the 64-bit AAX protocol used by Pro Tools 11, and is authorised online or to an iLok key. while the second new plug-in caters for offline pitch editing and correction. One of these is based on the section of the original plug-in that dealt with controlling the level of breaths, In Overview mode, you see simplified versions of all 11 processing modules with just a handful of controls. The update also sees these functions joined by two separate plug-ins as part of a more upmarket Production Suite version. Like the original, the new version 2 of the Nectar plug-in contains 11 separate processing sections, but the palette has been changed slightly, and now comprises Harmony, Plate Reverb, FX, Pitch, Delay, De-Esser, Saturation, Compressors, Gate, EQ and Limiter. Nectar, reviewed in SOS March 2011 ( /sos/mar11/articles/nectar.htm) was originally developed by iZotope as a comprehensive toolkit of vocal production elements wrapped into a single plug-in environment. With up to 13 different processing tools available, if Nectar 2 can't make your vocal track sound good, nothing can! ![]() You can also select words in the text and tap "Look Up" to access relevant information in a pop-up window. The interface is much more traditional, with a bin for clips, a viewer window for creating segments out of those clips, a full timeline with support for multiple audio and video tracks, and a canvas in which to view your final composition.Īt the top left of the window is the bin, showing 10 clips and the default sequence. However, after launching Final Cut Express, I sensed the transition would be easier than expected. ![]() Somewhere in my deep past, I had purchased a previous version of Final Cut Express, and so, with a $99 cost of entry, I decided to take the plunge and try to learn something new… of course, choosing to do so with a video blog due in only a couple weeks may not have been the best decision. (From where I sit, it’s the wrong decision, but then again, they don’t ask my opinion on such things.)įor a while, it seemed that iMovie HD was going to be my only option… but then, just before I was set to start working on the latest video, Apple released Final Cut Express 4, and dropped the price $100 in the process ($199 new, $99 upgrade). However, Apple has made it pretty clear that the future of iMovie HD is, well, not-the program has reached the end of its life, and for better or worse, iMovie ’08 is the future of consumer video editing on the Mac. With my dislike for iMovie ’08 and desire for a better solution, I was faced with a decision: do I go back to my tried-and-true iMovie HD, or do I set out in a new direction? I know iMovie HD inside-out, and it would certainly be an easy move to make. I also missed many of iMovie’s effects, and the more-logical manner of handling projects-iMovie ’08 automatically creates “events” when you import video, but I tend to think in terms of projects, and prefer direct control over such things. As you add more and more clips to a project, there’s a lot of scrolling around to find the portion of the clip you want to use. Overall, I just couldn’t adjust to this new paradigm, finding it imprecise, visually busy, and not at all intuitive. In addition, if you’re using the mouse like this to preview clips, you have to drag it from the rightmost edge of the frame back to the left in order to continue playing the clip when it spans more than one row. As you move the mouse over the clip bin, the clips play both audio and video-I found this very distracting and not at all useful. Here’s what the “bin” looks like for a project I was doing involving some X-Plane video captures:Īs you can see, each clip is represented as a number of stills, and there’s a thin break between each clip. In iMovie ’08, however, the traditional timeline and storage bin have undergone major changes-your videos are shown as a series of still images in both the bin and timeline area, and a traditional timeline view is not available.Īs but one example, as I noted above, clips in iMovie ’08 are presented as a series of still frames as you move the mouse over the stills, the video and audio play back. In a typical video-editing app, such as iMovie HD, you have a spot to store your video clips, and a timeline on which to place them. While iMovie ’08 added a number of interesting features beyond those offered in iMovie HD, it also removed quite a few, and more importantly to me, created a completely new paradigm for video editing. ![]() iLife ’08 includes a program named iMovie ’08, but it’s related to its predecessor in name only-iMovie ’08 is a completely new program. I was excited because I enjoy working in video, though it never seems I have enough time to do so, and nervous because Apple had recently (with the introduction of iLife ’08) basically killed off my video production tool of choice: iMovie HD. ![]() When I learned that I’d be part of the Macworld Video production team, I was both excited and more than a bit apprehensive. ![]() Click the radio button next to I Accept, and then click the Install button.
